Auto Repair Ripoffs

Although over $90 billion a year is spent by Americans, experts estimate that money lost to fraud and incompetence could amount to between 25 to 50%.

One ripoff that is common is that the computer needs to be replaced which can be between $400 to $900. In fact the problem maybe related to the computer but may be something as simple as changing a sensor that signals the computer. You should be wary if you are told that the entire computer system is down. When this happens get a second opinion.

A repair such as brake job encompasses repacking the wheel bearings but a common trick is to recondition your rotors and brake drums at an average cost of $130 and then tell you that they also need to charge you an additional $80 for repacking. This is a ripoff that is called charging someone for items in addition to the actual job even though both are part of the same job. The best solution is to get a written estimate of all parts and labor before you start and then you have a written estimate to take to a competitor to match costs and procedures that are necessary. This estimating is essential.

When the repair price is to good to be true it probably is to good to be true. You could be lured in on a $9.95 transmission tuneup and after they drop your transmission they develop fictitious repairs that need to be made and you are captive since you car as apart. Your protection is to get references from friends who have done business with a certain auto repair shop over a number of years.

Preventive maintenance that is not needed is the best rip off of all. Lets assume you are told that your shocks could go out so they should repair them. Your light bulb might go out but you don’t replace it when it is working. Granted parts that wear such as radiator hoses and timing belts must be changed before they fail. But in many other items the old rule of “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it “ might be a better rule to follow.

Protect yourself from auto repair ripoffs by getting a second opinion, going to shops who have references, and when auto parts or motorcycle accessories are replaced request to see the worn out parts.
