The 2010 Volkswagen Eos Convertible is a thing of beauty. Eos is the name of the car, as in “Ee-Ohs”, not an acronym “E.O.S.”. It’s a tiny car, but it packs a lot of features.

The Eos is a hard top convertible with a sunroof. Putting the top up and down is a show in itself. One touch of a button activates a flurry of activity reminiscent of a certain type of transforming robot from a certain recent hit movie (or two). The top slides and opens, compartments appear and disappear, and the top slides smoothly into its hiding place in the trunk while a small crowd gathers to gawk.

The trunk is surprisingly roomy for such a small car, especially when you consider the amount of space reserved for the top. The Eos also features an “Adaptive Front Lighting System”, which is German for “headlights that turn to help you see around corners.” The 2.0 liter TSI engine pumps out impressive power for a 4-cylinder. The Eos also features some innovative wind deflection screens, which allow you to drive with the top down at highway speeds without getting completely wind-blown.

Overall, the car is quite impressive, as long as you’re not looking for a way to haul your six kids to school every day. This is a fun car with great pick up and incredible visual appeal. And because it’s a Volkswagen, it is very well put together with safety and longevity in mind.

If you’ve got the means, the Volkswagen Eos is a fun, sporty car to drive. It’s almost as much fun to watch as it is to drive. You’ll always be able to draw a crowd when you put the top up or down.

Let’s face it, even with the bail-outs and rising gas prices (and prices rising on just about everything else), the economy still sucks. Jobs and careers still are disappearing as company after company declares bankruptcy. So, buying a car isn’t exactly an option on everyone’s horizon.

But right now is either the best (or worst) time to buy a brand new auto.

The current President and United States House of Representatives have passed numerous bills providing all types of discounts to new car buyers. Even more money is being deducted for buyer’s interested in picking up a new fuel efficient (and environmentally friendly) auto.

In fact, Congress just passed a bill, which allows car dealers to provide up to $4,500 in cash back to consumers who trade in their older (aging) or non-efficient autos for newer models. The bill also calls for the older autos that are traded in to be crushed, so that they are pulled out of commission and kept off the road.

Certain states even passed a bill that fully protects consumers if a car dealership defaults on paying off auto loans. This means that even if the company goes under, the consumer is protected and their money does not go down the drain.

GM and Ford came up with a “job-loss” protection program that will protect new car buyers for a certain period of time in the event they lost their job. In order to participate consumers must fit the criteria for state unemployment benefits.

The government also protected auto warranties for those manufacturers that could possibly declare bankruptcy. The auto industry bail-out set aside an option for the government to honor warranties for GM and Chrysler while they get back on their feet.

As you can see, there are plenty of deductibles and deals set in motion for consumers interested in purchasing a new car. There are a few more not even mentioned here, and as time goes on and more auto dealers file for Chapter 11, I can be quite sure more will surface.

So, if you’re thinking of picking up that new energy or fuel efficient auto you’ve had your eye on, why not go for it?

Are you a Gas Pedal Addict?

Do you have pictures of gorgeous sports cars all over your walls or decorating your office area? Then listen up, because you’ll love this.

Rinspeed, auto designer of some of the most beautiful concept cars in existence, has recently announced a new line of art up for grabs. The canvas style prints will come in all shapes and sizes and feature some of the most unique concept designs offered by the manufacturer.

The prints will be available in five different collections, originating from five different concept cars: the iChange, the sQuba, the eXasis, the zaZen and the Bedouin concept designs. Additional art will be offered to fans of E2 Fiat concept cars and their new models, which fall under a unique “Futurism” concept.

All prints will include art paper stretched onto canvas, fully protected by plexiglass, and each art piece will be available in different sizes. As always, to commemorate the release, Rinspeed is offering limited and collector’s edition versions with a special water-mark symbol on the back, which will allow art dealers to verify the authenticity of the prints.

Rinspeed is very well known for unique concept designs, such as the revolutionary iChange, which is a space module shaped auto that has no doors included in the body structure (it slightly resembles the exterior of a Maserati). Other unique concept designs include the Senso convertible type vehicle, the Splash water/land vehicle, the Presto electric vehicle and the Rone single manned sports auto.

To peruse some of the unique concept models look here.

In the future, cars will glide through the air powered by small turbo engines. Traffic will no longer exist on the ground, except for what’s left of many small wheel transportation vehicles. Since we don’t really know the design automobiles will take in the future, we only can speculate. Aptera, an independent auto company, has taken the forefront of the futuristic venture and developed the Aptera type-1 (2e).

The 2e features a complete aerodynamic design, which Aptera claims will be more efficient both on energy use and speed. The California built car will come in both complete electric and hybrid versions. Aptera states that the hybrid version will get up to 300 miles per gallon of gas, and both versions will have a top speed of 85 mph and go from 0-60 mph in under 10 seconds. A full recharge of the all electric version is slated to only take about a four hour charge while plugged into a standard electric socket (with a fully drained battery).

The body design of the 2e looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. The birth father (co-founder) of the auto, Steve Fambro, “dreamed of cruising past the masses in a vehicle that was safe enough to protect his new family, yet efficient enough to keep money in his pocket instead of feeding a gas pump”. So Fambro sought to “design a vehicle that follows nature and glides through the wind instead of pushing it.” As you can see in the photo, the car seems like it would do just that.

The Aptera 2e is technically considered a motorcycle because it includes three wheels total; two in the front and one in the rear. But the developers see it as a regular automobile much like the standard four wheel vehicles all over the roads. Aptera also claims that with all the efficient specifications, the 2e is the most efficient production vehicle in the entire world.

The Aptera originally had a set release date for sometime in 2008, but as we grow closer to the end of the year it looks more like the auto will be released sometime in early 2009. As if all this efficient talk wasn’t enough, the Type-1 is slated to cost less than $30,000.

Chrysler announced on Friday, October 24th, that they were indeed going to lay-off 25% of their salaried work force as a start in a large series of planned budget cuts to keep up with the sinking stats of U.S. automotive sales. Chrysler has an estimated total of around 18,500 white-collar employees, and the budget planning will affect about 5,000 employees of that overall total. Those being released actually work for other companies and are simply under contract with Chrysler.

“We recognize that in order to strengthen our competitive capability, and reduce the time and cost to achieve our objectives, we cannot operate as we have in the past,” said Chief Executive Bob Nardelli.

“In the near future, we will be making organizational announcements as a result of restructuring actions reflecting the need to find new ways to operate.”

Automotive industry analysts also believe that due to the Chief Executive’s comments about the current budget cuts that he has also mentioned future layoffs and plant closures as the company resizes to compliment the industry sales changes.

There also have been rumors and press releases stating that Chrysler may be sold off to General Motors or even Nissan. It would certainly explain the large budget cuts, which usually happens when a company is gearing up to fall under new ownership.

Either way this turns out in the end, this is surely a disheartening clip of news as the sinking U.S. economy begins to take several more casualties. Sadly enough, Chrysler may not be the only automotive manufacturer being sold off or sinking into bankruptcy. General Motors is slowly dwindling away assets and will likely be bankrupt within a year or two if the company doesn’t slow down its spending. Auto sales in the U.S. have fallen to a considerably low percentage as consumers pocket more money to deal with the current recession.

Analysts report that the automotive sales industry is not slated to pick back up and recover until sometime in 2010.

Expensive cars are a beautiful luxury, and for those of us with money, it is a great thing to buy during this time of recession. For those of us, however, without a large income, it’s tough sometimes to find great cars within our price range. Here’s a small list of new cars that have garnered good reviews that remain in the middle and lower class price ranges.

2009 Mazda 6- With some subtle changes to the exterior body, the new Mazda 6 looks much better than it ever has. While it may never be the sportiest sedan on the market, it will certainly without a doubt remain the one with the best quality. The car features a very roomy cabin and trunk, very powerful V6 performance, a smooth automatic transmission and excellent sport handling on the road. The biggest setback is that the car is not as fuel efficient as it claims and is made of some rather cheap materials on the interior. Prices start from around $18,550.

2009 Nissan Altima- The Altima always has been a powerful competitor amongst the sedan market, but it’s obvious the new model has proved it belongs there in the future as well. Nissan offers both 2.5 and 3.5L models, as well as a fully equipped Hybrid version of the car. The Altima has incredible power, gets great gas mileage, has plenty of cabin and trunk space, and includes some very unique features. The biggest setback is not with the car itself but with the availability of options on the car. A lot of the car’s best features are stripped in the lowest models. Prices start from around $19,900.

2009 Hyundai Genesis- This car packs a good bunch of features into an average car, even the base model comes with a great feature package. The car has optional V8 power, along with a stock engine that’s both smooth and powerful. The cabin and trunk space is just as roomy as the other two cars mentioned above, if not more. However, it is designed more for luxury, and has a few setbacks, such as a backseat that does not fold down and no all wheel drive package. Prices start from around $32,250.

Ever heard of a Bugatti Veyron? If not, then it’s probably because the car is way out of your price range, selling at a huge $1.5 million US dollars. It’s got everything a very expensive sports car should have: a sleek and sexy design, a supercharged engine for top speeds, and great maneuverability and handling. Sadly, however, most of the general public will never lay eyes upon such a powerful machine. Consumers will, however, be able to purchase a brand new Nissan GT-R in the $80,000 price range.

What does the 2009 GT-R have to do with the Bugatti Veyron? The unique performance specifications and sleek design have rightfully earned the car, by several automotive journalists, the name of “Baby Veyron”. While much cheaper and still very sexy looking, the car offers average consumers the chance to own a fantasy-like automotive. The $80,000 price tag still will make many cringe but is certainly not even close to the $1.5 million dollar cost of the Bugatti.

Nissan also has quoted a plan to release a lighter and more powerful version of the GT-R, which will be referred to as the GT-R V Spec or simply the Spec V. The higher performance model is still not scheduled to release until late 2010.

The GT-R boasts a 3.8L VR38DETT twin-turbo V6 engine, a 480 horsepower engine maxing out at 6400 rpm. The top speed attainable is clocked at 193 mph. The car is designed with a multi-functional, 6-speed dual clutch automated manual transmission. Even if you don’t fully understand the specs listed above, it’s obvious the car is very powerful.

Power is not the only thing this model has going for it. The design is very attractive, both inside and out. It also comes complete with a fully loaded leather interior, HDD navigation and music box system, and some of the coolest looking gauges you’ll ever see mounted on an automotive dashboard.

We have started a search for a new car. Having been a minivan owner for the past 9 years, I am more than ready to be done with that model. However, we need a vehicle that can hold up to 6 passengers, as there are times when all 4 kids are home. With so many different cars for sale, we have lots of options, including whether we want to buy a Nissan Pao. We can purchase a large SUV that would allow us to travel in comfort. We also could purchase a crossover SUV that would offer the seating we need but with better gas mileage. There also are some sporty wagons that we could try.

I started this new car search by taking a Toyota Sequoia for a test drive. I decided to take the Limited model with 4-wheel drive for a spin. this one had hot wheels and tires. The first thing I observed when entering the vehicle was its roominess. Whether you sat in the first, second, or third row, you had plenty of leg room. The next thing I noticed was how comfortable this vehicle is. Although it is built on a truck frame, it sure feels more like a luxury sedan.

Once driving the Sequoia I was able to appreciate its smooth ride. Driving on the highway, it accelerated nicely. Driving it on city streets, it moved well for such a large vehicle, able to change lanes gracefully. Although I am not a professional driver, I want a vehicle that moves at a good pace and has responsive handling.

Liking both the look and function of this vehicle, its mileage and price needed to be considered. This vehicle will cost approximately $50,000 with all of the features that we would want. Plus, with gas mileage of 13 mpg for city driving and 18 mpg for highway, this vehicle will need lots of fuel.

As this was the first vehicle test driven, we still have plenty to try. With the variety of autos for sale, we will be spending a fair amount of time driving an assortment of vehicles. Then we will need to compare all of our options, and choose the perfect fit for us!

Are you in the market for a new ride? The easy part is figuring out which car deserves your affectionate glances. And with a seemingly endless number of financing options, it’s typical to avoid thinking about the money until you have your heart set. Take it from someone who has bought and leased both new and used vehicles… it pays to do your homework. One financing option that can be somewhat cloudy and mysterious, but doesn’t need to be, is leasing.

Generally speaking, monthly lease payments are much lower than the loan payment you would make if you purchased the same car. Of course, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Leasing a car is like leasing an apartment, and buying a car is like buying a house. With a lease, you are paying on a monthly basis for the right to use the item, and signing a contractual agreement that you will make that monthly payment for a certain period of time. If you purchase (using a loan), at the end of those payments, you own something.

The decision to lease should be based on your finances, how you plan to use the vehicle, and your “five year plan”. If you are someone who puts a high value on having a relatively new car, and you expect to trade-in your vehicle for a newer car every few years, leasing may make sense. It may also be the right option if you don’t have very much (or any) money saved and available for a down payment. If your “five year plan” includes kids, but your “two year plan” looks more like a coupe than a mini-van, a lease may be the way to go. There are any number of website resources that will help you decide whether leasing may be the sensible decision.

Regardless of your reason for leasing, you should treat it just like buying; do your homework, and know what the dealer paid for the car, so that you will know how much they are trying to make from selling or leasing it to you. Because lease structures are a bit more complex than a straightforward auto loan, many people make the mistake of focusing only on the size of the monthly payment, simply because they don’t understand all of the terminology. Again, there are any number of website resources that will also explain how car leases are structured. CarBuyingTips.com is one site that is excellent at explaining things and providing you with some great links, tools, and calculators.

At the end of the day, you negotiate a lease in the same way that you would negotiate a purchase with the dealer, but in either case, time spent doing your homework will help to balance out the emotional side of the decision-making process, and you won’t end up paying more than you needed to pay for that shiny new toy.
