Good Sam’s RV Insurance 500

August 9th, 2011 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR, Racing News, Sprint Cup Series
Brad Keselowski somehow managed to win the Pocono 500 despite pain, fatigue, an hour and a half rain delay, and a broken ankle. Cinderella, your glass slipper is ready. With two wins this season Keselowski has put himself in solid position for one of the two Wildcard spots up for grabs in the Sprint Cup Chase.

The two Busch brothers, Kyle and Kurt, in that order, followed Kes across the finish line. A not-at-all happy Jimmie Johnson finished fourth after a little bumping between him and Kurt Busch on the final lap. I'm sure their friendly conversation on pit road

Brickyard 400

August 4th, 2011 - by Ronald A. Rowe | Nationwide Series, Racing News, Sprint Cup Series
Paul Menard had his day. Chevy didn’t do so badly, either. Menard won his first Sprint Cup race at the Brickyard 400 on Sunday. Chevrolets took the first four places and six of the top eight.

Menard played the fuel game and won. Even as he was streaking down the final turn, images of Junior’s last lap debacle earlier this year were playing through the minds of NASCAR fans across the fruited plain. Menard did have enough in his tank and he was able to hold off a determined Jeff Gordon who surely wishes it were the Brickyard 401.

The two

Kroger 200

August 2nd, 2011 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR, Nationwide Series, Racing News
Indianapolis. The home of Indy Car racing (which is convenient given the name). This weekend, though, Indianapolis - specifically Lucas Oil Raceway - was home to NASCAR's Nationwide Series. The 30th Annual Kroger 200 provided exactly the kind of thrills and action that Indy Car... doesn't.

Brad Keselowski streaked across the finish line after narrowly avoiding the carnage left behind when Brian Scott spun out on the Green-White-Checkered restart three past the scheduled distance. The GWC finish was necessitated by a nastier pileup a few laps earlier in which Elliot Sadler managed to wipe out his own teammate, Austin Dillon.

Federated Auto Parts 300

July 28th, 2011 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR, Nationwide Series, Racing News
Yes, Carl Edwards won the Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville and added another guitar - perhaps the coolest-looking trophy in all of sports - to his already over crowded collection.

Yes, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. won a significant victory by finishing second, even though most of the Sprint Cup crowd took advantage of the off week in the top division by skipping the Nationwide race as well.

Yes, Reed Sorenson won big by finishing 8th and snatching the points lead away from Elliot Sadler, who finished dead last (among those who actually finished the race).

All that is true, but there was

Lenox Industrial Tools 301

July 19th, 2011 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR, Racing News, Sprint Cup Series
The final lap of the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 was tense for me sitting watching at home. I can barely fathom how uptight Ryan Newman had to be on those last two turns, hoping against hope that he had enough drops of gas in his car to make it to the checkered flag. I’d imagine that Tony Stewart, following close behind, had mixed emotions seeing his teammate – the only driver between him and victory – running on fumes as they approached the finish line.

Whatever his emotions on that last lap as Tony Stewart the driver, Tony Stewart the
