A former Nascar official, Mauricia Grant, received a lawsuit settlement of $225 million dollars from Nascar for racial discrimination and sexual harassment she claimed she received working for the company for a total of two years. Quite frankly, I think this settlement is a little over the top and ridiculous.
As a whole, I can’t stand the fact that many people within this country profit by doing nothing but earning handouts. You may or may not think this is related to the blurb above, but I declare indeed it is. The settlement this woman received is a handout in ridiculous amounts that for better or worse will enable her to do pretty much nothing for the rest of her life (whether she still works or not is up to her).
I believe that racial discrimination and sexual harassment should not be tolerated in any workplace or anywhere in this country for that matter. I do not believe, however, that a 225 million dollar payout is needed in reward for those who receive it.
I could understand a small lawsuit in order for this woman to claim any losses or damage she may have received, but I do not believe that is anywhere close to how much Nascar paid out.
Sources close to her claim said she had been out of work for a long time and that, “She needed closure. She’s a young woman, and when you make the sort of allegations she did, it’s difficult to move forward and get on with your life.” While this is true, it was her decision to make the allegations in the first place, so wouldn’t this mean she was aware of the future possibilities? In any event, she should have been aware, seeing as people should always remain aware of consequences to their actions.
Insults hurt and maim, and harassment does cause damages, but $225 million dollars worth? Personally, I think that just shows what the woman’s real intentions were, in this matter, to get money.
I’ve been racially discriminated on many accounts while at work, and often the problems still continued after I reported to managers. Should I be entitled to suing the pants off the company I worked for in the amount of this much?
What are your opinions on the subject?

The $225 million dollar figure you mentioned was from when the lawsuit was initially filed. The settlement was confidential and the actual dollar amount was not released. It was likely far less than $225 million value.
