A few assorted notes and observations from NASCAR's Preseason Thunder this weekend:
Carl Edwards Picks a Lane
Carl Edwards is getting serious now. The co-leader in Sprint Cup Series points who lost the Championship to Tony Stewart by tie-breaker wants the title in 2012. To that end, he announced this week that he will not be competing in the Nationwide Series this year.
To be completely accurate -- Edwards didn't really "compete" in the series last year, thanks to NASCAR's decision to limit drivers to collecting points in only one series. Edwards

Carl Edwards is 32 years old. He is the son of Mike Edwards (actually Carl Michael Edwards I) who was a fine driver in his own right on the midget and modified stock car circuits in the Midwest. As of this writing, Carl II’s career earnings have topped $52 Million.
Edwards started his NASCAR career in 2001 on the Craftsman Truck Series. After just partial seasons, he joined Rousch Racing for a full year in 2003. He went on to win 3 races and Rookie of the Year honors in that season.

Not rain, not dark of night, not long boring delays filled with inane talking head chatter, could keep Tony Stewart from his appointed destiny – winning the 2011 Sprint Cup Championship. Unlike Saturday’s Nationwide finale, in which the championship was decided long before the final lap was run, Sunday’s Sprint Cup race kept us wondering right up until the end.
Amazing what a little motivation and a few friends will do for a driver. There was little doubt all day and night that Stewart and Carl Edwards were the two best drivers, with the two best cars, on this particular

All day long it was Carl Edwards or Tony Stewart. Edwards or Stewart. Stewart or Edwards. And the winner is… Kasey Kahne? It’s been over two years since Kahne tasted victory in a Sprint Cup race, but he broke his 80 race drought to take the checkered flag in Phoenix on Sunday.
Edwards and Stewart were right behind. Edwards finished one place ahead of Stewart, but Stewart led the most laps. That means the race was effectively a draw for the only two viable Sprint Cup contenders. Edwards maintains a scant three point lead over Stewart. The championship will be

They say that the greatest athletes are the ones who know how to step up their game on the biggest stage. If that's the case, then you can start calling Tony Stewart "Mr. Great". Stewart, who had a good but unremarkable 2011 season, has been nothing short of spectacular in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. He won the AAA Texas 500, making it an even four victories since the Chase started. That was good enough to trim points leader Carl Edwards' lead down to a scant three points.
