Denny Hamlin

December 7th, 2010 - by Ronald A. Rowe | Driver Profiles, NASCAR
Denny Hamlin is the driver who almost unseated reigning Sprint Cup champ Jimmie Johnson. He produced the closest competition in the history of the Cup and brought the Chase down to the final race. Although he fell just short, finishing 14th in the last race of the year to fall a piddly 39 points behind perennial winner Johnson, Hamlin had a terrific season on the NASCAR circuit in 2010.

Even in that final defeat, Hamlin claimed a victory. Hamlin kept his cool and his focus, even as the last hopes of winning the championship slipped away. By keeping his foot

Ford 400

November 23rd, 2010 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR
Jimmie Johnson did it. Again. Johnson didn’t win at Homestead on Sunday, but he didn’t have to. Second place more than enough to wrap up an unprecedented fifth consecutive Sprint Cup Championship. To put that accomplishment into perspective, Michael Jordon did not win five straight NBA Championships. Wayne Gretsky couldn’t win five consecutive Stanley Cups. For all the hoopla about Tom Brady and the Patriots, they didn’t come close to five consecutive Super Bowls.

To be at the top of any professional competitive sports for five straight years is a near super-human accomplishment. The only recent comparison is the great

Kobal Tools 500

November 16th, 2010 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR
The Kobalt Tools 500 provided some real excitement and drama after a most inauspicious start. After all the build-up, all the Daryl Waltrip histrionics, all the hoopla – the race went about thirty seconds before the first yellow flag came out. Brendan Gaughan found his way into the wall and out of the race on his first trip around the oval.

Denny Hamlin had a strong race and a real opportunity to claim the Sprint Cup Championship. He led the most laps. Adding a win on top of that could have put things out of reach for his competition. Instead,

AAA Texas 500

November 9th, 2010 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR
Denny Hamlin is in the lead for the Sprint Cup with just two races to go. He snuck past perpetual champ Jimmie Johnson with a first place finish at Texas. Other than the change at the top of the leader board, the most interesting action of the day took place along the sides of the track at Texas Motor Speedway.

While driving under a yellow caution flag, Jeff Burton slid into Jeff Gordon. Both cars went into the wall and out of the race. When Gordon exited his car, he eschewed the ambulance and opted instead to start a shoving

Amp Energy Juice 500

November 2nd, 2010 - by Ronald A. Rowe | NASCAR
Wow. Talladega had more in common with a daytime soap opera than a major sporting event. Drama. Suspense. Alliances forged and broken. Mysterious circumstances.

With a dozen or so laps to go, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon worked their way from the middle of the pack to the front with a dazzling display of team driving. Their flawlessly executed maneuver popped Johnson to first place, but Gordon immediately announced that his engine had blown up and dropped back into the pack. Curiously, Gordon then resumed racing with no signs of ill effects to his car.

Johnson then found himself with no
