Dollar General 300

by Ronald A. Rowe October 20th, 2011 | NASCAR, Nationwide Series
Sometimes being the best isn't enough. For most of the night Friday, Brad Keselowski looked for all the world to be the best driver with the best car on the track at the Dollar General 300. His sixth place finish doesn't mesh with his on-track performance. But even Kes is not immune to the effects of a flat tire.

Keselowski's misfortune was Carl Edwards' boon. Edwards, who hit the wall early in the race, bounced back nicely to take the checkered flag. This was Edwards' 37th career victory and his eighth of the 2011 season.

Kyle Busch was second. An interesting

Hollywood Casino 400

Jimmie Johnson (pictured) turned up the volume on his quiet season on Sunday. He was unquestionably the best driver with the best car on this particular day. He started in 19th, but quickly found the front of the pack and held it for 197 of the 267 laps in the Hollywood Casino 400.
I think we use the word "dominant" too often when describing an authoritative win in NASCAR. Johnson's performance Sunday defined the word and put other similarly-described victories in perspective. Kasey Kahne gave a game try to keep up with the 5 time defending champ on a Green-White-Checkered

Kurt Busch vs. Jimmie Johnson on the final lap.  How could you not love the AAA 400?  Well, fans of Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, and Jeff Gordon excepted.

Stewart fell out of first place, a position now held jointly by Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards (pictured), despite having won 2 out of 3 Chase races thus far.  NASCAR’s points system is a cruel mistress and Stewart’s ugly 25th place day dropped him into a tie for third with Sunday’s winner, Kurt Busch.  The two now sit nine points behind the leaders, and four points ahead of perennial champ Johnson.

Sylvania 300

by Ronald A. Rowe September 29th, 2011 | NASCAR, Sprint Cup Series
It's good to be Tony Stewart these days. Winning the first two races of the Sprint Cup Chase will give a guy a good feeling. Seeing some of your stiffest competitors flounder down into the teens and even twenties has got to boost those good vibrations even higher.

After Sunday afternoon's Sylvania 300, Stewart (pictured) is sitting nicely atop the Sprint Cup standings. Sure, he's just seven points ahead of former leader Kevin Harvick and everybody except Denny Hamlin still has at least an outside shot of catching him, but Stewart has the lead and all the momentum.

Nationwide Series Review

by Ronald A. Rowe September 27th, 2011 | NASCAR, Nationwide Series
With no Nationwide race this weekend, it is time to pull back and take a look at the contenders for the championship. In first place is Ricky Stenhouse Jr., winner of three races and numerous Best of the Rest awards this season. Stenhouse managed to stick around the top of the pack all year with twelve top five and 20 top 10 finishes.

Close behind Stenhouse is Elliott Sadler (pictured). Although he never found the checkered flag, Sadler had almost as much success as Stenhouse in staying close. He claimed 10 top five finishes and 20 times he was in
